Kräfta is an obvious winner, with a convincingly simple manner which discreetly fits in with the context, in terms of material and scale, and at the same time achieves both beauty and absolute originality in its creation of a building with a dramatic expression all its own. Sundsvall will acquire the signature building called for in the competition brief.
Harri Mäkiaho is born in 1977. He has studied architecture in Tampere University of Technology and in Oulu University. He has been working as a designer in several architecture offices since 2001 mainly designing mainly public buildings and housing. He is working in architect and engineering office in Tampere and at the same time is doing his master's thesis.
In October 2007 the Sundsvall Municipal Council resolved on an open architecture competition for an arts centre and theatre in the city. 180 entries had been received from around 30 countries. The entries have shed a manifold and interesting light on the competition brief, indicating both difficulties and opportunities presented by the programme and the site. The competition is part of a process and the winning entry will be developed in a dialogue between the architect, activity representatives and the client. The Jury’s task has been to find the project answering the brief in the best possible way and at the same time amenable to further alteration and development.
