The Ralph Erskine award is a triennial prize to an individual, group or organization for innovation in architecture and urban design with regard to social, ecological and aesthetic aspects. The applicant's efforts are to primarily have benefitted the less privileged in society. The award amounts to 10.000 USD.
Architect Ralph Erskine (1914-2005) was active from the 1940's and has had an immense influence on the Scandinavian architectural development. He was faithful to his belief in the development of a good and equal society and pledged and fought for, without compromise, the need for social and political awareness in the built environment.
Erskine received several international distinctions and prizes for his architecture over the years. Since 1986, he collected the earnings into The Ralph Erskine fund administered by the Swedish Association of Architects.
The Award 2006 was given to Rural Studios, Andrew Freear, Alabama, USA.
Applications for the next award are due on Feb 28, 2009 at ww.arkitekt.se/erskine2009
