Upplands Väsby

City: Upplands Väsby
Location: The Station Area
Population: 37,500
Study site: 40 ha
Site of project: 8 ha

TOPIC

The railway runs through the centre of Upplands Väsby, dividing it into an eastern part containing the commercial centre, and a western part with mainly housing. The aim for the competition is to develop strategies to connect the eastern and the western side, creating a new dynamic urban centre containing dwellings and a central public space. Here, the infrastructural hub gives the impetus to development. The competition site is located right at the station area, including both "sides" of the centre. Close to the site are other projects aiming at transforming the suburban character into a more urban one. Adjacent to the site is an area of defunct industrial buildings that will be reprogrammed for housing.

TERRITORIAL SCALE: CONURBATION

Upplands Väsby is part of the Larger Stockholm area and has around 37 500 inhabitants. Although on ancient ground, Upplands Väsby is a rather young municipality, situated some 25 km North of Stockholm and 45 km South of Uppsala, Sweden's fourth largest city. Through it's strategic position, communications is a central factor of Upplands Väsby. The motorway E4 passes through the municipality, and the main airport Arlanda is located 15 km North. With local train the population reaches Stockholm or Uppsala in half an hour, and Arlanda in 10 minutes. The settlements are mainly concentrated to the central part of the municipality, and the task is now to develop this area from a commuter suburb into a small town.

URBAN SCALE: STUDY SITE

The study area encompasses both sides along the railway, including the station area. Although the railway is a sharp barrier between the sides, it acts as an entrance to Upplands Väsby, with its public service for commuters. It is also an area with a very high noise level, because of fast trains and goods traffic. The main municipality centre, with shopping and services, is situated on the east side, one km from the station. This centre is connected to the station by a central street.

Programmatic intentions: Better connection between the east and west side of the station and a continuation to the central street is desirable. East of the station approximately 500 new dwellings will replace the old industrial area. Upplands Väsby seeks also to develop the west side of the station with dwellings and various kind of services and other content, aiming at a development from suburb to a small town.

PROXIMITY SCALE: SITE OF PROJECT

The site of project is a restricted part of the study site including the railway issues on both sides. Programmatic intentions:
