Nacka

City: Nacka

Population: 80,000
Study site: 20 ha
Site of project: 12 ha

TOPIC

The main focus of the competition is to create an urban area that can serve as a natural central node of the southeastern Stockholm region, both visually and structurally. The fast-growing municipality of Nacka currently consists of several independent urban structures which form a rather fragmented whole. There is a need to develop the current municipal centre into an intensified urban hub that connects to the surrounding urban fragments. The centre is already in the midst of a process of development. A neighbouring shopping mall is being enlarged, new dwellings are being constructed, new road, bus and tram connections are being planned and a new subway line connecting Nacka to Stockholm is also being foreseen. A new multi-function arena is also to be integrated into the project. The competition is a vehicle for acquiring a sustainable long term strategy that incorporates existing features and acts as a guideline for future expansion.

TERRITORIAL SCALE: CONURBATION

The municipality of Nacka is the eastern neighbour to Stockholm and the gateway to the archipelago. It is centrally located in the metropolitan area, with its westernmost parts already becoming part of the inner city. Many of its inhabitants are working in central Stockholm. But the municipality also retains large areas of wild nature and a traditional cultural landscape. It is situated on a plateau of primary rock with deep fissures, producing a markedly hilly landscape. The highest points are between 60 and 70 metres above sea level. The main highway called Värmdöleden is the main spline onto which most of the areas connect. The municipality has a constant growth in population and several different areas are being developed. The fragmentation of Nacka is creating individual qualities, but there is a demand for a better connectivity and a defined city centre with urban qualities.

URBAN SCALE : STUDY SITE

The study site is fragmented and largely dominated by infrastructure. The adjacent areas need to be connected with each other as well as with the main commercial centre.

Programmatic intentions: A new connection is planned under the highway to the northern shore, where new housing developments are planned. Also to the south and east, better connections need to be created to new developments on the southern side of Värmdövägen and to Nacka Forum, a large shopping mall that today is being enlarged and complemented by other functions such as housing.

PROXIMITY SCALE: SITE OF PROJECT

The site is bordered to the north by the highway, to the west by the high school premises, to the south by Värmdövägen, the historical axis of the municipality, and to the east by the street Vikdalsvägen and Nacka Forum. The core of the site incorporates the City hall, a high school area as well as several facilities for sports. Some of these facilities are possible to replace, but the task is rather to densify in between the existing built elements. A new multifunctional sports building, containing a small ice hockey arena, an indoor sports hall and several other facilities, can also be proposed within this area. In that case it replaces the existing ice hockey hall. The area to the north and east of the City hall towards Vikdalsvägen is well suited for a more dense urban development.

Programmatic intentions: A mixed use program consisting of housing and shopping is required. It is also important to consider the natural qualities of the site, where especially the green and rocky hill in the centre of the site is of high value.
