The concept of this proposal is to ”harden” the north-east corner of the hill and make this eroded side into a backdrop to the Asplund building in a very elegant fashion. Most of the new library extension lies under the hill and two of the annexes are retained. Acting as a backdrop to the existing urban landscape and creating a new park that relates to the existing one facing Sveavägen, the area is given many new qualities. The possibility of walking on a new intermediate level in the park, on the roof of the new library extension is very attractive. The connection to the Asplund building over the corner is very elegant. Despite its setback position, the proposal exposes its facades both towards Sveavägen and, via an extended entrance area, towards Odengatan.

Placing the new library’s right angle against the inner corner of the Asplund building creates a diagonal composition towards the hill that captures the original intention in Per Olof Hallman’s large-scale plan for the area from 1915. This plan was Asplund’s first starting-point.

This is one of the few projects that give the library a new facade towards Sveavägen and the library park to the east. It is true that the proposal does go slightly outside the competition area, but it should be possible to rectify this in the next stage of development without jeopardising the qualities of the proposal.

The project is very economically presented but contains a very strong concept that is both intelligent and poetic and is razor-sharp in its simplicity.

The area inside the library seems to be too small compared to the area requirements and its description is very sketchy. The library functions need considerable development in the second stage of the competition.

Förslagets koncept att ”hårdgöra” kullens nord-östra hörn och ge denna eroderade sida av kullen en gestalt som bakgrund till Asplundbyggnaden är mycket vackert. Den nya biblioteksdelen ligger i huvudsak under kullen och två av annexen behålls. Genom att vara som en fondvägg till den urbana situationen och skapa en ny park som relaterar till den existerande mot Sveavägen får platsen många nya kvaliteter. Det är mycket tilltalande med möjligheten att röra sig på en ny mellannivå i parken, på taket på den nya delen av biblioteket. Anslutningen till Asplundbyggnaden över hörnet är mycket elegant. Trots sitt indragna läge exponerar förslaget sina fasader både mot Sveavägen och, genom en utvidgad entréplats, mot Odengatan.

Genom att förlägga det nya bibliotekets räta vinkel mot Asplundhusets inre hörn skapas en diagonal komposition mot kullen som fångar upp den ursprungliga intentionen i Per Olof Hallmans stora plan för området från 1915. Denna plan var Asplunds första utgångspunkt.

Detta är ett av de få projekt som ger biblioteket en ny fasad mot Sveavägen och biblioteksparken i öster. Visserligen går förslaget något utanför tävlingsområdet men det bör vara möjligt att i den fortsatta utvecklingen bearbeta detta utan att förslagets kvaliteter förfars.

Projektet är mycket sparsmakat presenterat men innehåller ett mycket starkt koncept som både är intelligent och poetiskt och har en mycket hög skärpa i sin enkelhet.

Ytan i biblioteket tycks bli för liten för lokalprogrammet och är mycket skissartat beskrivet. Biblioteksfunktionerna behöver i hög grad utvecklas i steg två av tävlingen.
