This proposal creates an entirely new composition together with the Asplund building, Stockholmsåsen and Läkarhuset.

The north face of the ridge is detached and becomes a key part of the library—the rounded outdoor area associates to the rotunda in the Asplund building. The excavated face can be transformed from an abandoned interspace to a high-quality park that will be omnipresent in all parts of the new library extension.

The narrow, tall building towards Odenplan relates to the 1960s complex to the west in both volume and height, whilst at the same time providing a backdrop to the Asplund building. The largest volume of the extension is pushed up against the south-west corner of the site, which is well motivated since it then has a relationship to the existing taller buildings facing Odenplan and does not compete with the Asplund building—its volume should be studied further however in order to achieve the perfect balance and be kept within the competition area.

The lower-rise part towards Odengatan not only binds the library together but also reinforces the streetscape without obscuring the hill and the park. The project has a very high-quality sequence of public, semi-public and private outdoor areas.

There are parallels to the Asplund library in the lightness and richness of detailing, even though it is much more abstract than the existing building. The ethereal lightness of the new extension reinforces, if anything, the concrete expression of the Asplund building. The project offers a good solution to where Stockholmsåsen meets Odengatan, which is currently vague and ill-shaped. The qualities achieved as a result of the new composition that shapes the end of the ridge and binds the Asplund library and the 1960s buildings together justify demolition of the annexes.

The library has a unifying, very open room in a low-rise component facing Odenplan for various public activities and it is easy for visitors to get from this room to the Asplund building or to specialist departments in the higher-rise new component. This makes the library very communicative and gives it a sense of both openness and variety.

The main entrance to the new library extension is strategically located although slightly concealed. The entrance from the Observatory Park increases the library’s openness and provides several possible routes through the building.

Several library functions still need to be further developed but the project should be able to withstand such modifications based on its fundamental design.

Detta förslag skapar en helt ny komposition tillsammans med Asplundbyggnaden, Stockholmsåsen och Läkarhuset.

Åsens norra sluttning frigörs och blir en väsentlig del av biblioteket – det rundade uterummet associerar till Rotundan i Asplundbiblioteket. Den utgrävda sluttningen kan förvandlas från ett överblivet mellanrum till en högklassig park som kommer att vara närvarande i den nya biblioteksdelens alla rum.

Det smala högre huset mot Odenplan relaterar till 60-talskomplexet i väster till volym och höjd, samtidigt som det skapar en fond till Asplundbyggnaden. Den största volymen av tillbyggnaden är skjuten upp mot det sydvästra hörnet av tomten vilket är väl motiverat eftersom det därmed får en relation till de redan högre husen mot Odenplan och inte konkurrerar med Asplundbyggnaden – dess volym bör dock studeras ytterligare för att uppnå den perfekta balansen och hållas inom tävlingsområdet.

Den lägre delen mot Odengatan binder inte bara ihop biblioteket utan förstärker också gaturummet utan att skymma kullen och parken. Det finns en mycket fin sekvens av offentliga, halvoffentliga och privata uterum i projektet.

Det finns paralleller till Asplunds bibliotek i gestaltningens lätthet och detaljrikedom även om den är betydligt mer abstrakt än i den befintliga byggnaden. Det nya tilläggets skira lätthet förstärker snarast Asplundbyggnadens konkreta uttryck. Projektet löser mötet mellan Stockholmsåsen och Odengatan som idag är mycket vagt och ogestaltat. De kvaliteter som åstadkoms genom den nya kompositionen som gestaltar Stockholmsåsens avslut och binder samman Asplundbiblioteket och 60-talsbyggnaderna motiverar rivning av annexen.

Biblioteket har ett samlande mycket öppet rum i en lågdel mot Odengatan för olika publika verksamheter och det är enkelt för besökaren att från detta rum ta sig till Asplundbyggnaden eller till specialavdelningarna i den högre nya delen. Detta gör att biblioteket blir mycket kommunikativt och upplevs som både öppet och varierande.

Huvudentrén till den nya biblioteksdelen har en strategisk placering även om den är något dold. Entrén från Observatorieparken ökar bibliotekets öppenhet och ger flera möjliga vägar att röra sig genom huset.

Det återstår att vidareutveckla flera biblioteksfunktioner men projektet bör tåla sådana omarbetningar utifrån den principiella organisationen.
