The cut into the ridge is a very strong and unique concept that reinforces the effect of the ridge as it will enhance the perception of its entire height. The project is based on a simple fundamental idea but at the same time contains major complexity. Even though basically all the buildings on the site remain, the Asplund building is placed in a new context and its monumental character is strengthened. A series of varying outdoor spaces are created which reinforce each other both in quality and personality.

The project is successful in its attempt to contrast with the Asplund building, creating a kind of Yin-Yang situation. The differences complement each other and reinforce the character of each of the various buildings. The new building has such a unique expression that it becomes the project’s defining characteristic. It will represent both itself as a building and the library as an institution.

Some parts of the new library extension spread out between the annexes, an aspect that can be called into question. The connection to the Asplund building, which is unclearly presented, needs to be developed since it is vague in form and should be given a different location.

A visitor to the new part of the library will have to walk through a square, pass glass facades and landscape before entering the library. This will give him/her an idea of the library’s construction and what is going on in the library before even entering the building. The entrance area also leans a little towards the entrance and further sharpens the senses prior to the visit to the library. This can be interpreted as a variant of the entrance into the rotunda from Sveavägen, as designed by Asplund.

The new library’s U-shape allows visitors to follow what is going on in other parts of the library, which is very positive. But this also creates some practical and logistical problems and another horizontal communication would be needed to improve the functionality of the building. It will be a major challenge for the architects to improve the library’s functionality without weakening its strong idea and concept. The plan is otherwise comprehensively and flexibly organised and the vertical communications are well located. Putting the Swedish Children’s Books Institute in the annexes is logical. The proposal needs to be studied and developed as regards natural lighting to ensure it is not too dark.

The project requires excavation of the ridge, which can make construction work complex. On the other hand, once any construction difficulties have been overcome, the project should be energy-efficient and provide a stable indoor climate.

Snittet i åsen är ett mycket starkt och unikt koncept som förstärker åsens verkan då upplevelsen av hela dess höjd kommer att tydliggöras. Projektet bygger på en enkel bärande idé men innehåller också en stor komplexitet. Även om i princip alla byggnader på tomten finns kvar så hamnar Asplundbiblioteket i en ny kontext och dess monumentala karaktär förstärks. En serie av varierande utomhusrum (platser) skapas vilka förstärker varandra i kvalitet och personlighet.

Projektet vill kontrastera mot Asplundbyggnaden och gör det framgångsrikt, det blir ett slags Yin-Yang-situation. Olikheterna kompletterar varandra och förstärker respektive karaktär i de olika byggnaderna. Den nya byggnaden har sådan unik karaktär att den blir ett signum för projektet. Den kommer att representera både sig själv och biblioteket som institution.

Vissa delar av den nya biblioteksdelen flyter ut mellan annexen, vilket kan ifrågasättas. Kopplingen till Asplundbyggnaden som är otydligt redovisad behöver utvecklas, då den är svagt gestaltad och bör få en annan placering.

En besökare till den nya biblioteksdelen går över ett torg, passerar fasader av glas och landskap och in i biblioteket i en sekvens av upplevelser som gör att man redan innan man kommit in i biblioteket får en uppfattning om dess uppbyggnad och om vad som försiggår i biblioteket. Entrétorget lutar dessutom något mot ingången och skärper ytterligare sinnena inför besöket till biblioteket. Det kan tolkas som en variant av den av Asplund regisserade processionen in i Rotundan från Sveavägen.

Det nya bibliotekets U-formade organisation gör att man kan följa vad som sker i andra delar av biblioteket, vilket är mycket positivt. Men den skapar också en del praktiska och logistiska problem och det skulle behövas någon ytterligare tvärkommunikation för att skapa en bättre funktionalitet i huset. Det kommer att bli en stor utmaning för arkitekterna att förbättra bibliotekets funktionalitet utan att försvaga dess starka idé och koncept. I övrigt så är planen generellt och flexibelt organiserade och de vertikala kommunikationerna väl placerade. Att lägga Svenska Barnboksinstitutet i annexen är logiskt. Förslaget behöver studeras och utvecklas när det gäller dagsljusbelysningen.

Projektet kräver en utgrävning av rullstensåsen som kan bli påfrestande för byggnationen. Å andra sidan när väl dessa eventuella konstruktionssvårigheter är utredda bör projektet vara energieffektivt och bjuda på ett stabilt inomhusklimat.
